Field guide
Gravel driveway visibility at night
Lighting and edge cues for gravel and loose-surface driveways, where painted lines fail and physical edging does the work.
Why gravel is the hardest surface to light
Loose surfaces scatter light and make edges inconsistent. Tyre movement also changes the surface, so a neat route in daylight can look messy after dark.
Edge cues that survive a loose surface
Raised edging, timber sleepers, setts, reflective posts and low glare side lighting are more durable than paint on loose aggregate.
When paint is the wrong tool
Paint generally belongs on stable hard surfaces. For gravel, use physical edge definition first and reserve paint for adjacent concrete, tarmac or paved sections.
